DotNetNuke has many SEO features, but some are less obvious to the casual administrator. These SEO features, however, can have a dramatic effect on how your DNN website is indexed by Google, Bing and others, and as such, can have an effect on your page rank and search results.

Here are a few DNN tips and tricks to help in your DNN’s SEO:

1. Site Map Priority
Buried within your page settings is a feature that allows you to set indexing priorities to your DNN pages. To get there (once logged in as an administrator), go to “page settings”, then “advanced settings”, then at the bottom of the window, go to “other settings”.

Here you will find the item: “Site Map Priority”. The default for this is .5. However, if your page is the home page, or perhaps a landing page, you will want to up the number to 1.0, or .9 (1.0 being the highest). This will increase the perceived importance of the page by search engines such as Google. Where is this relevant? When your organization appears in a Google search, high priority pages may be presented as sub-links to the home page more frequently. This can be critical in immediately directing visitors to key pages in an organic search result.

2. Site Settings

Here we’ll talk about one of things NOT to do when it comes to SEO in DotNetNuke. In the “site settings” of DotNetNuke, administrators have the ability to enter descriptions and keywords. By doing that, those items will then be placed in the META tags for EVERY page on the DNN website. For SEO, this is an extreme no-no, as it will confuse the search engines and reduce the relevancy and page rank of your overall DNN website. It may be an easy way to get keywords throughout your site… but it will definitely hurt you in the long run!

3. Page Titles
One of the nice features about DotNetNuke is its ability to add dashes between spaced words in your page title. For example, if you title a page “DNN SEO Tips”, DNN will title the actual URL as “DNN-SEO-Tips”. This ensures that the individual words in the title will be relevant to Google.
Some administrators like to use underscores between words. For example: “DNN_SEO_Tips”. This is strongly discouraged as Google will index the entire string as one item. This means people searching for DNN, or SEO or Tips will not see your site on Google. They would only find you if they specifically put “DNN SEO Tips”. In some cases this may be a good thing, if your content is very niche-oriented. But if you’re looking to gather visitors based on more broad searches, using underscores will hurt you.

4. Robots.txt
OK, this one gets a bit technical for the casual DotNetNuke administrator, but robots.txt is an important factor when comes to SEO, so what we’ll do in this section is give you enough information that you can intelligently go to your IT person or your hosting provider to ask questions.

In short, the robots.txt function (which not accessible via the administration tools in DNN), tells various search engines such as Google what pages to index and what pages they should not. Pretty important! But, if your DNN website is with a host provider and you are operating on a shared instance (one installation of DNN with many portals), you may be operating on one, centralized robots.txt file, which may be configured to tell the robots to ignore all pages on your site!

There is a way to take control and get around this, but it takes someone with access to the server and a bit of IT knowledge. But, don’t let that stop you from finding out if your robots.txt file is configured properly.

Ask your IT or host provider:
Is your DNN website on a shared instance?
Do you have an individual robots.txt file for your specific DNN website?

DotNetNuke 7.0 now defaults to ‘View Mode’ – which, despite the fancy name – just means the content, by default, looks as it will to the site visitors.    And, because it defaults to ‘View Mode’, the old ‘View Mode’ wording/button/control – it’s gone now.  It’s just the normal view, or edit or layout views.  Simple.

3. Drag and Drop



You select the thing you want to add (Text/Html module) then you drag a copy of that to the place on the page you want it.   That’s it – couldn’t be simpler or more intuitive.  To me it is very elegant in operation because not only are you putting things where you want, but the page expands dynamically to show where the insert will be.

4. Auto Save

With the Text/Html module, your content can be auto-saved as you type.  No more lost content.  Much fewer curse words being sent in the direction of DotNetNuke installs.  A real positive step forwards.

5. Control Panel

The new DNN 7 control panel uses the concept of common, less common and user-configurable areas.  Or, in plain-speak, things you use all the time, things you don’t, and a place where you can make your own list.

DotNetNuke (DNN) is a web application Open Source Platform and has grown in popularity over the years because it does a very good job of solving the problem of basic web solution. In this article, I am going to explain how we can create custom role and assign roles to the user.

Using "Roles" is one of the greatest features in DotNetNuke (DNN). Based on that, we can give rights to user to view pages, View Modules, access menus, etc. Roles can be customizable. We can restrict a user to view some page or some part of a Page based on the role only. Let's see how we can assign a role to a newly created user.

1.  Click on Edit (Pencil) icon for that user to whom we want to add a Role. Let's say I clicked on Edit icon of user "Abhijit Jana".


2. Click on "Manage Roles for this User" Link. This will redirect you to Create and Assign Role Page.


Here we can select the Roles for user. One user can have multiple Roles. We can give theeffective and Expiry date for roles too. Just Select Role from "Security Role" Dropdown and Select date if needed then click on the "Add Role to User" Link. This means selected role is now given to that user. We can also remove the added role in a similar way by clicking on Delete (Cross) Icon.

Creating new roles are very simple. Follow steps bellow:

1. From Admin Menu Clicks on "Security Roles" Link. This will open a new page with the list of all existing Roles.


2. Click on Down Arrow Icon with Security Roles (Lock Icon), and select "Add New Role" as shown in the picture given below, I am going to create a new Role:


3. Here we need to give the Role Name and Description with other details. Then we need to click on the Update button to save the Role:


5. On update, "Sales Team" roles will be added with the list of Roles. We can use the Edit (Pencil) Icon to Edit the Role.



I have already discussed how to assign a role to a user. We need to flow the same steps. Below are the sample screen shots where I am assigning the newly created "Sales Team" Role to a user.

One of the many benefits of DotNetNuke is the ability to easily control which users of the website can see and interact with what content. You can control the security and settings at the Page and Module level. This is useful if you wanted to create sections of your website that are for registered website users, members only, or for employee only sections.

Roles

A role is usually a group of users. There are a couple default roles such as Registered User, Unauthenticated user as well as a subscriber. However, you can create as many roles as you may need for your website. Examples may include PaidMembership, Employee, BoardofDirector, or Blogger. You can then add users of the website to a role.

Users

A user is anyone who has a username and password to access the website. You may have created them an account, or possibly they registered and created their own account. By default every user will be in the Registered Users and Subscribers role. You can then manually add that user to additional roles as needed. Some modules like the 3rdparty DNNspot.com Store can automatically add users to roles after buying a certain product. For example, after they purchase a ‘membership’ it can add them into a member’s role.

You can read about page and module settings to learn more about how to configure what users on your website can access which areas or control who can edit what.

Managing Users

From the admin Users page, which can be accessed in the upper right corner under ‘common tasks,’ you are able to Add/Edit/Delete Users, manage passwords, as well as determine what fields you want to collect when a user registers.

Extending User Profile & Account Registration

By default, when you register DotNetNuke will collect a username, first name, last name, display name, email address, and a password. If you want to collect more information than the basics, roll over the blue arrow on the Users module and select Manage Profile Properties. You will notice when you access this area that you will see many more properties that you can enable and also you can add more fields by clicking Add New Profile Property. If Required is checked then the user must provide a value for that field. If visible is selected then it will be shown on the new user registration page. 

However, by default, DotNetNuke is configured for the basics registration options unless explicitly told otherwise. To get DNN to honor the custom profile fields you need to access the Users section then select “User Settings.”

The setting you want to change is Require a valid Profile for Registration. Set that to true and DNN will then use the custom profile fields on the new user registration page.

User Settings

You will notice a lot of settings in the User Settings area. The first two sections regarding Membership Provider Settings and Password Aging Settings are all controlled from your DotNetNuke web.config file. These cannot be configured from within DNN, only by editing that file. Many of the User Account settings are for configuring how the administrators User list is displayed. Then you have some valuable options like where to redirect the user after logging in, after logging out, or after registering. You can also require them to complete a CAPTCHA during the login or registration process. The require valid profile option is to show the user the additional profile properties when creating an account. Require a valid profile for login is an option in case you want to create someone’s username and password then send that to them. Once they login, they will have to complete the rest of their profile before getting access to the site.

Dotnetnuke Hosting :: Step to Step to Restore Your Dotnetnuke Database With Dbo Schema to Non Dbo Environment

Dotnetnuke standard installs using the dbo as the default user. Some hosts however, like shared hosting service providers, do not allow you to use dbo. So in this case you have to install Dotnetnuke using your assigned username. This should work without any problems. But in case you have an existing website which was installed using the dbo user and you would like to migrate it to a hosting provider that does not allow dbo you have a problem.

The easiest way to migrate a Dotnetnuke website is by backing up the entire web and the database and restore it to the new environment. This will work fine only if your new environment allows dbo. If it does not you will find that when restoring the database all objects will have been assigned to your username and not to dbo and your web will not run.

To resolve this issue you can follow the steps outlined below after which your web will run without any problems. As this procedure requires changes to the databse please be sure to have a backup of your database and website. Note: This procedure is for a SQL server 2005 database!

Step 1:
Open your web.config file and look for "owner". Change the owner from dbo to your database username.

In Microsoft SQL Server management studio select all stored procedures that DO NOT have aspnet in their name, rightclick and select "script as create to new query editor window".

Some of these may not apply to you, and I advise you to exert discretion in deciding which of these work best for you.

DNN Optimization:

  1. Host Settings
    1. Set the "Performance Setting" to "Heavy Caching".
    2. Depending upon Hosting resources, set the "Compression Setting" to "Deflate Compression" or "GZip Compression".
    3. Depending upon Hosting resources, enable "Whitespace filter" (not of much use, if you have also enabled compression).
    4. Disable "Users Online" for Installations on which "Users Online" module is NOT used.
    5. Set the "Scheduler Mode" to "Timer Method". "Request Mode" causes the Scheduler to be invoked on every request to a page of your installation.
    6. On sites where Logging is NOT mission critical, enable "Event Log Buffer", so that log entries are buffered before being flushed.
    7. On sites where the Site files do NOT update frequently, disable "Auto-sync filesystem".
    8. Uncheck "Enable Ajax" on portals that are just informative, and do NOT involve management tasks.
  2. Admin Settings
    1. On DNN 5 portals, unselect "Enable Skin Widgets" if they are not being used to prevent redundant skin file downloads.
  3. Log Settings
    Disable all Logs NOT required on an installation. In particular,
    1. Disable "Application Start".
    2. Disable "Application End".
    3. You might also want to disable others like "Scheduler Started", "Scheduler Event Started" etc. depending upon if they are not much useful to you. However, "Sceduler event Failure" should not be disabled to enable debugging of any scheduler issues.
  4. Schedule Settings
    Disable or customize all Schdules NOT required on an installation. In particular,
    1. Configure "DotNetNuke.Services.Scheduling.PurgeScheduleHistory, DOTNETNUKE" to run every 5 days (or whatever fits best to your portal depending upon how much Schedule Log your portal generates).
    2. Configure "DotNetNuke.Services.Search.SearchEngineScheduler, DOTNETNUKE" to run every 5 days and retry after 1 day (again depending upon what fits best to your portal. There is no one size fits all approach here).
  5. Javascript & CSS Optimization
    1. Manually optimize all css & js files to remove redundant white-space (or use a free or paid DNN module e.g. Page Blaster to manage this task for you).
    2. Zero out portal.css (if you dont use it, or better still, delete it).
    3. Check ~/portals/_default/default.css for any styles not being used on your portal.
    4. Try to use any other menu except SolPart Menu.
    5. Try NOT to use table based skins (improves the perceived rendering of your page).
  6. Cookies: Set the appropriate value for Persistent & Session cookies in web.config.
  7. Compilation: If you are compiling DotNetNuke or any Extension from source, make sure that you compile the project in Release mode. Moreover, make sure you have debug="false" in web.config for your production sites.

1. Allow customisation of every aspect of the Url for the page

The Url is so important for the page. It tells the user what is on the page by looking at it, and it’s one of the most important things you can put keywords into for your page.   For the Url Master and Friendly Url Provider modules, the most common request I get is ‘can I get rid of the ‘articleId/entryId/propertyId/categoryId’ from the ‘News Articles/Blog/Property Agent/Catalook’ module? This is because people are stuck with Urls like /articleType/viewType/articleId/3/my-article-name.aspx’, and they just want ‘/articles/my-article-name.aspx’ – or, in my case, they just want ‘/blog/blog-entry-name.aspx’ or similar. The point is, developers, you have wean yourself off just throwing in a database-id into the query string and calling it finished. It’s a lot more work, sure, but it’s the most important thing you can do to a module.

2. Don’t allow duplicate Urls for the same content

Duplicate content is something we must all watch out for. You don’t want the same page being accessed by more than one Url. If you do have more than one Url, you should have 301 redirects back to your chosen ‘canonical’ Url.    This means making sure, that in your code, if you are generating links between pages of content, you don’t generate multiple versions of Urls back to the same address.

3. Allow customisation of the Page Title, Meta Description and Meta Keywords for the page

This is a very common problem. The base DNN page information allows the specification of the Page Title, Description and Keywords. Once you add a module displaying ‘dynamic’ content, driven by query string values, the content probably won’t match the ‘generic’ Title, description and Keywords.

The Title and Description are important, because of the Search Engine Result Pages, or ‘SERPs’. Everyone is familiar with the ‘clickable’ header on the SERP, and the short two or three line description.   In many cases, the Html Page title is the header, and the Html Meta Description tag is the two or three line description. It’s here where you need to convert people looking at a page full of results to actually click on your page – particularly if you aren’t ranked number 1 for the result.    By allowing crafting of individual Descriptions and Page titles separate to any other page content, you allow site authors to fine-tune their SERP results without affecting what the actual page looks like.

Many modules available just throw an automatically generated value into the Page description, and title, or, worse, don’t even change it from what the base page value is.

4. Don’t use AJAX for content display

I love using AJAX pages – where they are suitable.  If you’re displaying static content to a user (and 90% of all websites do exactly this) then don’t use AJAX. There’s no point. People expect to see a page refresh when they click on a link. Leave AJAX for more complicated editing tasks where it is really useful. AJAX has the ability to hide lots of good content behind postbacks and javascript, where search engine spiders won’t find it.

5. Allow customisation of the anchor text for all links

This is something that most modules actually do a reasonable job of, but it’s worth repeating – if you are generating links to different parts of your content, allow the author to customise the text of that link. Perhaps there is a particular keyword they’d like to link with, which is different to the ‘title’ or ‘name’ or whatever. Let them customise the link text.

6. Use simple layouts and CSS design

Early DNN was table heavy – and I’m not part of the crusading crowd that wants to run the sword through any website that dares to put a table in for display purposes. Sometimes a table is necessary, sometimes not.   But don’t force tables on your websites. Just keep it simple with div and span elements, and let CSS do the heavy lifting of organising the content. That way, skilled authors will be able to modify the CSS and change the layout quite easily. They’ll be thankful, but, most importantly, the Html will be cleaner and more likely to be indexed effectively by search engine spiders.

7. Use H1, H2 and H3 tags for headings, instead of the ‘Head’ class

Most people who have studied SEO techniques know that you need to use emphasis on the keywords of your content, so that the search engines know what the page is about. The search engines know that ‘h1’ and ‘bold’ and ‘em’ mean that the particular words inside are important to the overall meaning of the page.

So use the H1, H2, H3 tags where suitable. There is an in-built DNN CSS class called ‘Head’, and you should avoid it. That’s what ‘H1’ is for.
