Sometimes, you’ll see this error when trying to add an new article, there is the error.

Error: DNNArticle Edit is currently unavailable. DotNetNuke.Services.Exceptions.ModuleLoadException: This property cannot be set to an empty string. Parameter name: value ---> System.ArgumentException: This property cannot be set to an empty string. Parameter name: value at System.Net.Mail.SmtpClient.set_Host(String value) at DotNetNuke.Services.Mail.Mail.SendMailInternal(MailMessage mailMessage, String subject, String body, MailPriority priority, MailFormat bodyFormat, Encoding bodyEncoding, IEnumerable`1 attachments, String smtpServer, String smtpAuthentication, String smtpUsername, String smtpPassword, Boolean smtpEnableSSL) at DotNetNuke.Services.Mail.Mail.SendMail(String mailFrom, String mailTo, String cc, String bcc, String replyTo, MailPriority priority, String subject, MailFormat bodyFormat, Encoding bodyEncoding, String body, List`1 attachments, String smtpServer, String smtpAuthentication, String smtpUsername, String smtpPassword, Boolean smtpEnableSSL) at DotNetNuke.Services.Mail.Mail.SendMail(String mailFrom, String mailTo, String cc, String bcc, String replyTo, MailPriority priority, String subject, MailFormat bodyFormat, Encoding bodyEncoding, String body, String[] attachments, String smtpServer, String smtpAuthentication, String smtpUsername, String smtpPassword, Boolean smtpEnableSSL) at DotNetNuke.Services.Mail.Mail.SendMail(String mailFrom, String mailTo, String cc, String bcc, MailPriority priority, String subject, MailFormat bodyFormat, Encoding bodyEncoding, String body, String attachment, String smtpServer, String smtpAuthentication, String smtpUsername, String smtpPassword, Boolean smtpEnableSSL) at DotNetNuke.Services.Mail.Mail.SendMail(String mailFrom, String mailTo, String cc, String bcc, MailPriority priority, String subject, MailFormat bodyFormat, Encoding bodyEncoding, String body, String attachment, String smtpServer, String smtpAuthentication, String smtpUsername, String smtpPassword) at ZLDNN.Modules.DNNArticle.PubEditor.SendEmail(DNNArticleInfo objDNNArticle, Boolean NewArticle, Boolean JustApproved, PortalSettings PortalSettings, Hashtable Settings, Boolean IsSendEmail, String Email, String EmailSubject, String EmailTemplate, String NewArticleEmailSubject, String NewArticleEmailTemplate, String ApprovedArticleEmailSubject, String ApprovedArticleEmailTemplate, Int32 SubscribeModule, String SubscribeEmailSubject, String SubscribeEmailTemplate) at ZLDNN.Modules.DNNArticle.BaseEditor.SendEmail(DNNArticleInfo objDNNArticle, Boolean NewArticle, Boolean JustApproved) at ZLDNN.Modules.DNNArticle.EditDNNArticle.SaveArticle() at ZLDNN.Modules.DNNArticle.EditDNNArticle.cmdUpdate_Click(Object sender, EventArgs e) --- End of inner exception stack trace ---

The issue is caused by new send email API in DNN 6.2. If the SMTP server is not set up, when the send email API is called, it will throw the error. To fix it is simple, you can set up the SMTP server in host->host settings. Or you can disable the email notification in module settings. It will solve your problem.

DotNetNuke Hosting - ASPHostPortal :: Speed Up your DotNetNuke 6 Design

clock Oktober 11, 2012 08:28 by author Jervis

In this post, I'm going to take a bit more of a 'code-centric" no-nonsense approach to what your form should really look like, I hope that this helps you. To help make this post as helpful as I can, I'm going to start out with some key CSS Classes then I'll move into the actual form pattern.

CSS Classes

The following is a listing of the new CSS classes that I've been using and found to be key to working with the new form pattern.

CSS Class

Purpose

dnnForm

Used on a "div" element to wrap the entire contents of a form.

dnnFormItem

Used on a "div" element to construct an individual item in a form

dnnClear

Used to ensure that floating content has been cleared

dnnFormRequired

Used to indicate with the red indicator bar that a form field is required. Typically used on TextBoxes

dnnFormError & dnnFormMessage

Combined when added to a RequiredFieldValidator or similar control will enusre that the display is shown using the consistent error display that is used on all DNN forms.

dnnActions

Used on a "ul" to hold a listing of buttons for actions within a form

dnnPrimaryAction

Used on a "button" to have it styled as the primary action.

dnnSecondaryAction

Used on a "button" to have it styled as the secondary action, typically just as a link

dnnFormSectionHead

Used on "h2" or similar element to style an item as a section heading

Now the above listing is just a subset of the CSS Classes that were added, but these are the basic ones that I needed to get my forms updated to the new standard.

Coding the Form

So, it is all fine and dandy that I have these items defined, but what does it actually take to get the form coded? Actually it is very simple, and I'll break it down into a number of steps for you.

Form Overview

To ensure that we start out on the right foot, lets take a high level look at what a form should look like:

<div class="dnnForm dnnClear">

    <ul class="dnnActions dnnClear">
        <li><asp:LinkButton id="btnSubmit" runat="server"
                  CssClass="dnnPrimaryAction" text="Submit" />
        </li>
    </ul>
</div>

As you can see here it is pretty simple, a div to contain the entire form, then at the bottom an actions list to handle your operations.

Form Items

Once we have the overview of the form created, we can add our items. In the most basic structure items should look like the following.

<div class="dnnFormItem">
    <label>My Label</label>
    <asp:TextBox id="txtMyTextbox" runat="server" CssClass="dnnFormRequired" />
    <asp:RequiredFieldValidator id="myValidator" runat="server"
        ControlToValidate="txtMyTextbox" Text="My Error"
        CssClass="dnnFormMessage dnnFormError" display="Dynamic" />
</div>

Now, notice here that we have an individual div for each item, within this we have a HTML label and then our control(s). If you are used to using the DotNetNuke Label control for providing localized labels and help information you can substitute that control for the label as used in the above example.

To continue building out your form, simply add additional Form Item Div's as needed within the dnnForm div created above and your will be set to go.

I hope that this basic overview of the general form structure has been helpful. In future posts I will show how to create expanding/collapsing sections using the jQuery helpers

DotNetNuke 6 Hosting - ASPHosPortal :: Upgrading DotNetNuke 4.9.5 to DotNetNuke 6.0

clock Maart 27, 2012 07:18 by author Jervis

DotNetNuke is a content management based on Microsoft's .Net Technology that allow non-technical users to create, modify and customize the appearance and working of their websites. DotNetNuke Corp recently released DotNetNuke 6 that allows much more simplified user interface and increases productivity by making it much easier for the user to build and maintain websites.

In this tutorial we will walk you through a detailed step-by-step process to how to download and upgrade existing DotNetNuke 4.9.5 to the latest version, DotNetNuke 6.0.

Before formally starting the process let us make this very clear that it is possible for the user to directly upgrade DotNetNuke 4.9.5 to DotNetNuke 6.0. Most of the tutorials published over the internet would suggest that it is either not possible or requires to install number of enhancement packages to directly upgrade DotNetNuke 6, which is fortunately not the case. Many would suggest to go step-by-step from DotNetNuke 4.9.5 to 5.5 and then to DotNetNuke 6.0. Here we will show with the help of screenshots that if you have IIS configured properly and have all matching specifications then there is no issue in upgrading DotNetNuke 4.9.5 to DotNetNuke 6.0 using the platform of Windows 7.

Specifications:

In this tutorial we are assuming that:

- Users have Microsoft SQL Server 2005/2008 or SQL Express.

- Currently using DotNetNuke 4.9.5 on Windows 7. It should be noted that DotNetNuke 4.9.5 is perfectly workable on Windows 7.
- Microsoft IIS (Internet Information Services) 5+, IIS 7 are recommended.
- Microsoft .NET 3.5 SP1 ( can be obtained via Windows Update).

Before starting the upgrade process you must, as always, first create a backup of the website and the database. Never ever try to upgrade DotNetNuke on live site without creating the backup. There are number of ways that can be used to create backup for your website. We will elaborate few most common and easy methods to create backups.

Database backup:

As you can see in the screen shot that we are using Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio 2008. To have a backup of your existing database navigate to your specific database in Enterprise Manager, right click on the database and select "All Tasks" >> “Backup" and save the “.bak” file at a secure location.

SQL Backup to app_data:

One common method is to copy the database backup in app_data folder with ".resources" extension. The will enable you to copy the compete website including database as a single unit (zip file).

Taking your site offline:

If your site is online and have regular visitors then it is better to leave a message that will let the visitors know of any back end enhancements. All you have to do is to place "app_offline.htm" in the root directory. ASP.NET will itself display the visitor a friendly message that the website is currently under maintenance or you can edit the file to left a message that suits you. Once the upgrade is complete you can simply rename the file "app_offline.htm" to "app_offline.htm.exclude" or can even delete the file.

Upgrading DotNetNuke 4.9.5:

The backup has been created and we are all set to move forward with the upgrade process.

Downloading the upgrade package:

DotNetNuke 6 upgrade package can be downloaded from
http://www.codeplex.com/. All we need is to visit the website, search with the keyword "DotNetNuke 6" and the top most result would be the one we should be looking at. Navigate to the download tab at the top of the page and make sure that you download the latest version upgrade. For your ease here is a link that will navigate you directly to the upgrade page.

Once the upgrade package has been downloaded, the next step is to extract the contents of the ZIP archive to any local folder. Make sure to uncheck the "block option" under properties, sometime this option comes as "checked" when zip files are downloaded.

Upgrade to DotNetNuke 6:

To begin the upgrade processes we will navigate to our local root directory where the files of DotNetNuke 4.9.5 exist, “c:\inetpub\wwwroot\”, which would look like this c:\inetpub\wwwroot\dnn4\. Now we will copy all the files from the upgrade package that we have just downloaded and replace them in the directory where DotNetNuke 4.9.5 was installed “c:\inetpub\wwwroot\dnn4\”.

Running the upgrade wizard:

Once the files are replaced we are going to recall the website in the web browser or simply strike this link “
localhost/Install/Install.aspx?mode=upgrade” into your web browser.

You will realize, as can be seen in the snapshot, that the upgrade process has been triggered itself. You don’t need to do anything but to wait for few minutes until a message at the bottom shows the status as “Upgrade Complete”.

Click at the bottom to access you portal, enter your credentials and you are good to go.

Dotnetnuke has now made it easier for the users to upgrade from one version to another without facing much issue. But there might be some permission problems during the upgrade process. To overcome such scenarios make sure that you have set all the required permissions to give user full control on the website. Navigate to "Security" tab of your DNN folder under “wwwroot” directory to confirm that you have all the required permissions fully configured.

DotNetNuke 6 Hosting - ASPHostPortal :: How to Make Secure a DotNetNuke Installation

clock Maart 6, 2012 06:36 by author Jervis

In this post I'll walk through the simple process of changing your configuration to go from Encrypted Passwords to Hashed passwords and a bit of detail as to "why" you want to make the change.

Why Hashed Instead of Encrypted?

This is a pretty common question that I get from people and the short, simple answer is with regards to how the passwords can be used. If you have Encrypted passwords, it is possible to retrieve the users current password and e-mail it to them. It is equally as easy for any custom module to read the passwords of user accounts with a simple API call.

Hashing the passwords uses a forward-only method to store the passwords in a secure pattern, and when users login the same hashing process is used to validate the password, rather than decrypting the password and comparing it. Additionally when hashed password resets from the core will send users a new password, which helps to reduce the risk exposed by sending passwords via e-mail in that at least you are not potentially giving away a users "common" password.

Where Is This Configured?

The configuration of the Membership system is done in the web.config, and a default DotNetNuke configuration section looks like this.

<add name="AspNetSqlMembershipProvider"
    type="System.Web.Security.SqlMembershipProvider"
    connectionStringName="SiteSqlServer"
    enablePasswordRetrieval="true"
    enablePasswordReset="true" r
    requiresQuestionAndAnswer="false"
    minRequiredPasswordLength="7"
    minRequiredNonalphanumericCharacters="0"
    requiresUniqueEmail="false"
    passwordFormat="Encrypted"
    applicationName="DotNetNuke" />

 The property we are concerned with is the "passwordFormat" field as well as the "enablePasswordRetrieval" property. We need to be concerned with both, as it isn't possible to 'retreive' your password when they are hashed, so failing to change both properties will result in errors.

How/When to Make the Change

Now, on the surface this looks like a really simple change, update two values, and we are done, right? Well it isn't quite so easy as there are a number of things you need to look at, so I'll discuss the actual change and situations to consider.

The Change

For all scenarios the changes are the same, enablePasswordRetrieval should be set to false and passwordFormat should be set to "Hashed". As with any change of this nature, be sure to take a full site and database backup, just in case it doesn't workout as planned.

New Installs - Before Installation

When working with a new install, if you make the changes noted above BEFORE you run the install wizard, you will have a portal setup from the beginning with the proper configuration. This way is the most preferred as it is simple, quick, and doesn't expose you to any risks at all. Once the portal is installed, simply use as you would normally.

New Installs - Limited User Base

If you have a newer installation but don't yet have a large number of users on the system you can still make the change, your existing users will be able to login to the portal, but their passwords will forever be in the "Encrypted" state. (Per my testing). Once you make the change, it is recommended that you create "different" users for each of these user accounts, which will keep all users secure, and all users with the same password format. You can simply delete the old user accounts.

Now, as you can imagine this is not an ideal situation, so doing it before you install is the best option overall

Existing Installs - Large User Base

This conversion requires a lot more effort to change and coordinate. I have written a module that does this, but am working through issues on DNN 5.5.x and later where it isn't working as it should. Regardless, a more manual process is needed to temporarily decrypt the passwords, then one-by-one reset the user passwords back to the same thing, just hashed this time around.

Conclusion

I hope that you find this helpful. Keeping user information secure is a very important task, and this is just one way that we can help keep things secure.

DotNetNuke 6 Hosting - ASPHostPortal :: Skinning Containers in DNN6

clock Februarie 21, 2012 09:30 by author Jervis

With the latest major update to DotNetNuke, there have been some questions as to what has changed in skinning for DotNetNuke 6.0. One big change has been the introduction to the new Manage button automatically into the containers. Some love it, some hate it, and others seem to still be undecided.

I actually like it. Although, the lack of placement control has been a little annoying. It was said the reason to purposefully take this out of the skinner’s hands was to help provide consistency. While I can understand that, as I am a huge proponent of consistency, there are several scenarios where having control would be helpful. Just one example would be when the module and container have a very small amount of content. The manage buttons and text seem to get a little lost.

Simplified Container Coding

The introduction of the Manage button introduces a couple of other changes to skinning a container. There is now no need to have a DNNActions menu, as this is directly replaced by the Manage button. There is also no need for the Action buttons, as these are now also located within the Manage button menu. This leaves skinning for the new DNN6 container, extremely simple, which I love! Here is my code for a normal container:

<%@ Control language="vb" CodeBehind="~/admin/Containers/container.vb" AutoEventWireup="false" Explicit="True" Inherits="DotNetNuke.UI.Containers.Container" %>
<%@ Register TagPrefix="dnn" TagName="TITLE" Src="~/Admin/Containers/Title.ascx" %>

<DIV class=NormalContainer>
    <H2><DNN:TITLE id=dnnTitle runat="server"></DNN:TITLE></H2>

Overcoming the DNN 6 Manage Button Alignment

Now, back to my issue with the positioning of the aforementioned Manage button. I am sure the guys at DotNetNuke had a reason for placing the Manage button where they did, however, I personally feel that it would be best placed on the top right of the container. Module titles and text don’t always extend to the right edge of the container making it easier to spot. Just add this CSS to your stylesheet.

.dnnActionMenu { right:10px; left:auto; width:95px;}

Explanation of the CSS

The “right:10px” moves the button to the right side with a margin of 10px from the edge. The “left:auto” overrides the default CSS for the manage button. And, the “width:95px;” is the width of the button and is necessary to keep the manage button from growing with the right side of the button planted to the right edge of the container as you drag the Manage button around.

DotNetNuke 6 Hosting - ASPHostPortal :: Refining User Interface in DNN 6

clock September 19, 2011 08:24 by author Jervis

DotNetNuke 6 has been a release experience unlike any in the history of DotNetNuke.  We have had more packaged releases, more visibility into the code, more discussions with the community and a greater iterative approach to development than at any point in our past.

The community has been able to follow along with us as we progressed from the early UI concepts to a much more polished and refined look.  If you were really adventurous, you could watch this transition on almost a daily basis as we kept up a steady stream of code updates on
CodePlex.  Because we intentionally moved to a longer release cycle, we have been able to go through many iterations, getting community feedback all along the way.  With each release our community has told us what they liked, and what they didn’t.  After each CTP we have been able to incorporate some of the feedback to help arrive at a much better product.  As a result we have been able to progress to what we think is a much more contemporary look, even while taking into account the needs and desires of the overall community.   This is just not something that was possible when we were operating under shorter release cycles.

In order to truly appreciate how dramatic this transition has been I thought I would share the progression of one of the central UI elements for DotNetNuke – the login screen.

In CTP 1 we had not begun any of the major UI changes and you can see the same login experience we have had since DotNetNuke 3.0.  There have been some changes to the way that logins work under the covers, but the UI appearance has been relatively static for a long time.   Notice the harsh contrast between the labels and the background as well as the blocky appearance of the login button.  The default red used for the link buttons is also overly harsh and distracts the user from what should be their primary focus.  Overall, this is not a very polished look and personally I will be happy to leave it behind.

In CTP 2 we introduced the concept of modal popups as a key element of the new UI makeover.  Our first foray into the use of popups relied heavily on
Telerik ASP.NET AJAX components.  This was ok but didn’t provide a very contemporary look.  We were also not overly excited about the HTML that was generated by the use of the Telerik window.  It made the page heavier than we liked, and was not as designer friendly as other alternative approaches.

One of the great features of the Telerik window is that it allowed the user to resize and move the popup window.  It also allowed the window to resize itself to accommodate different pages that might be displayed in the window.  Other than the use of a popup, we didn’t spend much time on styling the login control itself.  CTP 2 was a good first effort but clearly needed a lot more work.

CTP 3 saw a number of dramatic changes.  In this release we transitioned to the use of
jQuery UI based popups.  We also started applying some new styling to the login form itself.  What is not apparent from this screen shot is that our popup forms were a fixed size.  Since there was no auto-sizing available with the jQuery UI, we had to pick a popup size which would accommodate many of the larger pages like Admin and Host settings.  This created a very unappealing experience on the login screen which looked very odd with all that extra white space.

In addition to the change in the popup style, we also started work on styling the rest of the screen.  Here we can see very preliminary work.  Colors are more muted, corners are a little less harsh and the page looks a little more stylish, however there was still lots of room for improvement (pun intended).

In the upcoming Beta 1 release, you will see a much more polished UI.  The login screen is back to being sized more appropriately and the screen is now completely styled using the new DotNetNuke 6 design.
